Fear Mongering

As a camp counselor in my late teens, homesickness and insecurity plagued me. But the worst was fear. Here I was to protect my littles, and I was afraid of what could be lurking behind the trees. Often, their worries surfaced at night as the shadows fell and the busyness of camp activities stilled. Tucking them into bed, I’d lie on my bunk and softly sing every song I could think of, from “Jesus Loves Me” to bedtime lullabies. It soothed us all, until I would slip out of my cabin to go to the mess hall. The darkness echoed with every twig break and leaf scrunched under my feet. It was at that point I began memorizing 2 Timothy 1:7.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” KJV

I’ve needed that verse in many seasons of life. When fear seizes the world, it reminds us our enemy is on the rampage. He rules this world, but not our hearts. Paul said,

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 NIV

In verse 16, he says, “Therefore, we do not lose heart.”

Go back and see what therefore is there for. He offers purpose and hope, and reminds us in the rest of the chapter, this trouble is temporary. When we fix our eyes on the eternal, the grip of fear is loosened from our minds and hearts. The footnotes in my NIV Bible say, “We live under pressure, perplexity, persecution, and pain. This is part of human existence. Despite all these problems, we know Christ is alive and working through us. This gives us confidence to face life’s threats and problems.”

So, how can we combat the mass hysteria we find in the media?

Philippians 4:8-9         Focus on these things, and peace will come.

Colossians 3:12-17      Pursue these things, and administer grace.

James 4:7-10               Do these things and your enemy will flee.

Have you ever been fly fishing? Does a fisherman drop a line straight down into the water? It’s a graceful sight to behold, as he casts his line far away into the depths. That’s what 1 Peter 5:7 and Psalm 55:22 remind us to do with our troubles; throw them to the Lord and let Him handle them. He will care for you. Don’t panic; pursue peace.

Book Review: Waiting for God

Waiting for God by Xochitl Dixon

Are you waiting for God to act on your behalf? Does it feel like He isn’t involved in the day to day details of your life? Xochitl Dixon brings a refreshing look at God’s Word and His pacing. She says God’s plan and pace are perfect, and then illustrates with personal examples, as well as through the stories of others walking the long road of the wait.

Xochitl (soh-cheel) Dixon writes through daily struggles with chronic pain, showing compassion for those who suffer. She is a regular contributor to the Our Daily Bread devotional and other publications. Through blogging, Xochitl shares her journey and yearning to nurture spiritual growth through prayer and the study and application of Scripture.

Waiting for God: Trusting Daily in God’s Plan and Pace is a gift of companionship. Often, pain sufferers live in isolation. Pain keeps us from reaching out for the help we need and makes us feel alone. But Waiting for God breaks the solitude with stories of perseverance, hope and encouragement. It equips us to “Inhale God’s Word. Exhale in prayer. And rest in God’s love.”

What kind of pain do you carry? Is it grief, physical ailments or broken relationships? Xochitl will comfort your heart by pointing to the Savior. She leads with passages of Scripture, prayer, and provoking questions. She reminds to view the wait as a collection of countless opportunities to get to know God more, trust God more, honor God more, and worship God more.

Xochitl says, “When we limit our desires to the things of this world, we’re hindered by our own limitations as created beings. Every idol we try to set up in our hearts can only fail us. No matter what happens in the wait, no matter what we’re longing for, the Lord Almighty will give us more than enough to persevere. He will be more than enough, because He is the only one who is enough, the one and only true God. The time God provides for us is precious and purposed for His glory. As we fall deeper in love with Jesus, He can give us an eternal perspective. The Holy Spirit can empower us to obey because we want His plan to prevail. Our loving Father can help us trust His perfectly timed pace.”

I want that deeper love; don’t you? Join me in the quest to thrive in the waiting seasons, as we see “the pause” through Xochitl’s eyes.

Book Review: Isaiah’s Legacy @WaterBrookMultnomah #Partner #sponsored

Isaiah’s Legacy @WaterBrookMultnomah #Partner #sponsored

Isaiah’s Legacy takes a wild ride through history with Israel’s king, Manasseh, and those intertwined in his life. Throughout his lifetime, Manasseh earned the title of brutal, fierce and wicked. However, Mesu Andrews asserts, his is “the greatest prodigal journey in Scripture.”

Mesu Andrews is the Christy Award–winning author of Isaiah’s Daughter and numerous other novels, including The Pharaoh’s Daughter, Miriam, Of Fire and Lions, and Love Amid the Ashes. Her deep understanding of and love for God’s Word brings the biblical world alive for readers. Mesu lives in North Carolina with her husband, Roy, and enjoys spending time with her growing tribe of grandchildren.”

I sat on the edge of my seat, waiting to see how the story would be redeemed. Yet, the plot darkened. I grieved with characters over the fight for power and prestige, yet, the wicked kept winning. Is this how God grieves over our decisions that separate us from Him?

Isaiah’s Legacy highlights the darkness of following one’s own counsel and rejecting wisdom from the Lord. Like those of long ago, we find cracks in our faulty theology and hope for a return to faith in the one, true God. When faced with unimaginable terror, God’s followers find unexplainable peace, and we remember He uses good and bad as instruments in His hands. If you’ve ever wondered how the Israelites could so easily be led astray, read this narrative of how events could have been arranged. It’s eye-opening and puts flesh and bones on vague names and missing faces. You, too, will agree with the Queen Mother, “I don’t understand why Yahweh allows evil to win,… but of this I’m absolutely certain. My God is good. He has a plan. And His victory will somehow be bigger than our sorrow.”

Isaiah’s Legacy is absolutely a must-read for your library!

Book Review: The Great Lemonade Stand Standoff

The Great Lemonade Stand Standoff

The Great Lemonade Stand Standoff highlights what happens when cool agents Jake, Sophia and Brody face off against Albatross agents in their quest to foil cool agent plans. The misadventures of the lemonade brigade turn sour and send the agents scampering for a back-up plan.

Author and dad, Art Rainer is the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Art is a self-proclaimed Albatross fighter who helps people make good money choices.

Right off the bat, we’re introduced to characters with secret intel given from the narrator to the reader. In that conspiratorial tone, we watch from a front row seat as Jake, Sophia, and Brody become cool agents with sunglasses and black suits. The trio take off to solve their first challenge and we hang on to the side of their rocket car for the adventure.

Art Rainer has managed to bring an entertaining element to learning about money management. A fun read for ages 8 – 12, this early-reader fiction provides math problems to solve and giving lessons to learn. It gives parents a solid foundation for talking about money principles and things kids like to be grossed out about, like used chewing gum and stinky body odor. Rainer even congratulates readers halfway through and rewards with unusual money facts.

An excellent book, The Great Lemonade Stand Standoff is one I can’t wait to share with my grands. I know it will bring laughter as the agents race to save their friend from the stinky Albies, agents of Albatross. You can get a copy, too. Hang on for the ride as you set out on your quest to learn how to Give, Save & Live God’s way!

As a teacher of God’s Word, I appreciate the leader’s guide, including keys to a dynamic small group. As a reader of God’s Word, I appreciate the breakdown of a daily reading plan, to apply a practical method of study. And, as a student of God’s Word, I appreciate the study resources, including in-depth teachings, Bible studies and message notes. Each book of the Bible has an introduction, sidebars, footnotes and articles to pursue a better understanding of the material in the context and intent.

When I think about receiving my first study Bible, I remember the joy I found in the pages of notes. The cross-references became a delightful jigsaw puzzle and helped me piece together an understanding of who God is and who He wants to be in my life. The notes throughout gave insight to difficult passages and provide an “ah-ha” to God’s code book.

Today, that Bible is a cherished friend; the notes I scribbled in the margin became signposts for direction. Underlined portions of Scripture jump out every time I turn the page. My desire to share God’s Word in reviews, is that others would also find the thrill of discovery within its pages. God wants to be known by you, and He gifts so many translations, so that we can know Him. Fresh Start will delight, disciple and direct you, as you dig into daily deciphering!

I am giving away a copy of the Fresh Start Bible to one reader in the continental United States. Leave a comment on my blog (at the top of this post, under the title) about tools you use to study God’s Word and you will be entered into the drawing, to be held in three days, December 18.

Book Review: The Promises of God

The Promises of God

What are the promises of God? Charles Spurgeon highlights one each day for 365 days. He says, “A promise from God is like a check payable to order… We are to take the promise and endorse it with our own name by personally receiving it as true.”

Who is Charles Spurgeon? A Reformed Baptist pastor, Charles Haddon Spurgeon lived 1834-1892 and was called “the Prince of Preachers.” He wrote The Promises of God to comfort our hearts. He says, “God is good. He will not forsake you. He will bear you through. There is a promise prepared for your present emergencies. And if you will believe it and plead it at the mercy seat through Jesus Christ, you will see the hand of the Lord stretched out to help you. Everything else will fail, but his Word never will. He has been so faithful to me in countless instances that I must encourage you to trust him. I should be ungrateful to God and unkind to you if I did not do so.”

Who is Tim Chester? Also a Reformed Baptist pastor, Tim Chester translates his love for the writings of Charles Spurgeon into a journey to communicate Spurgeon’s works for today’s audience.

Written in first person, Spurgeon offers humble insights to his own ponderings of God’s promises. His depth of understanding offers page after page of reassurance that God’s promises will never fail, but will surely come to pass. He reminds us of our blessed inheritance in Christ (Genesis 28:13), of purposeful lives (John 1:50), that we will never be refused (John 6:37), and of God’s presence (Exodus 3:12).

The Promises of God is a classic daily devotional. Spurgeon says, “The more we study the words of grace, the more grace we will receive from the words.”

Get a copy for yourself and one for a friend. As you look at God’s Word through the eyes of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, you’ll see Gods’ promises come to life for you!

Book Review: Sleeping Near the Ark

Sleeping Near the Ark

How does a writer deal with doubts and writer’s block? Michael Gantt and Barbara Haley contend, it’s by Sleeping Near the Ark.

Pastor and author, Michael Gantt travels extensively to declare God’s truth in compelling forms. Michael organized The Kenya Development Fund in support of the students of the Immanuel Christian School for the Deaf. Michael is the author of five books.

Barbara E. Haley, a retired elementary teacher and Reading Interventionist, seeks to remind her readers of God’s great love and encourage them to grow closer each day in their level of intimacy with Him. Barbara has authored and contributed to six books.

Sleeping Near the Ark is a delightful gem, shining light from all angles on how a writer can reflect God’s heart to readers. The premise of the book is from 1 Samuel, where the boy received his calling from God. The Ark of the Covenant represents Jesus, the presence of God among us. And, the call of the book is, Lord, let me sleep near Jesus, “so close to the presence of God that it rubs off on everything I write.”

The authors pose purposes for writing, with the ultimate goal for writers being “to encourage, to inspire, to challenge, and to heal.”

Get a copy of this book for the writers in your life, but especially for yourself. Writer or not, we all need the inspiration of God at work in our lives, and this treasure guides through positioning ourselves to hear from God, to pondering in focused ways the things He is speaking to us. This is one book you’ll want to glean from, again and again.
