Caregivers often do not choose that title. It may come by default when a family member becomes ill, or because of close proximity to one who is suffering.
I have been a caregiver for my dad for over twelve years and when I took care of my mom-in-love, it provided a crash course in learning about her symptoms, past ailments, and what to look for in her health and decline into dementia.
