Why Do You Work?
Why work? Maybe some would say, “to
make a difference in the world,” or “to help
others,” or “to pay the
bills.”
Work is a part of life. It began in Eden
with the edict to till the ground (Genesis 3:17-19). Solomon declared work
to be a gift from God (Ecclesiastes 5:18-20). And Isaiah 23:18 gives three
goals for working.
Maybe in its’ purest form, work is self-expression. Whether or not
you do what you love, your work reflects you. Maybe that’s why Paul
was so adamant about honoring God in our work (Colossians 3:23).
In what ways do presentations reflect on us? It reflects on integrity when
we’re ill-prepared. It casts us in a bad light when we’re
flippant in the way we deliver. On the positive side…a well
researched article or speech may entice someone to want to know more. This
gives another opportunity to be the resource.
Assignment:
Take fifteen minutes every day to think
about your motives for writing and speaking. Ask the Lord to reveal the
hidden layers so that you can be honest with Him (Psalm 51). Then work out
your goals together. Let Scripture take the lead in giving you perspective.
Write out verses that inspire your work and cling to them for inspiration.
Here are some of my favorites to get you started:
Isaiah 58:11
Psalm 22:25
Proverbs 25:11
Isaiah 61:1
John 14:12
Isaiah 40:1-5
Keep up the good work!
“It does not matter if today’s
results do not show, they will in time.” (Quote from Pam & Peggy’s books, on www.flylady.net) Each
thing you accomplish will lay the foundation for the next item. And you
will be able to celebrate the work that you’ve done!
