Speaker 911!
I answered an emergency call this month. No, I'm not an EMT, but I was able to come to the rescue of a group whose speaker was unable to come at the last minute. It can happen to any of us; as you might recall, it happened to me! Back in February, I landed in the ER instead of delivering my talk at MOPS. And a friend stepped in for me at the last minute.
So what do you do when you get a frantic call? Say "no"? Absolutely not! As speakers, we're in the business of serving people. We look for ways to help them and the benefits boomerang back to us.
*Look at past talks you've done, to see if they can be tweaked to this group's theme.
*Use a favorite book as a spring board for a talk. When Andi Smeltzer filled in for me, she used Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages for her outline. A perfect topic for moms at any stage of parenting!
*Pull out a holiday theme or something seasonal to center around your talk.
Whatever route you pursue, ask the Lord first for direction. He's been down that road before, and wants to guide you to be a meaningful speaker for Him!
Funny you should ask...
The week before I got that emergency call, our discussion at CLASS chat centered on that very topic. Pamela Sonnenmoser moderated, and talked about being flexible when given short notice. You might tweak your topic by keeping the Scriptures but changing the analogies to fit your audience.
Her reminder? God does not need me, but He lets me be a part of what He is doing.
So, prepare. But be sure to bathe it in prayer.
Twofold Assignment:
*Consider joining us on a Tuesday night for CLASS chats. Log on to www.classervices.com and follow the instructions to get to the chat room. You would be amazed at how much you can learn in an hour! Sessions start at 9pm EST with the lesson, then allow for open discussion thereafter.
*What are you most interested in learning about in the realm of speaking? Send it to me in an email and I'll research it for next month's ezine. If your question wins, then you will be highlighted in that ezine as well!
