What’s
New?
Today
is packing day! I am fueling the church vans and getting the trailer
ready for our Women’s Retreat. Tomorrow morning we’ll head out for a
two day event at a retreat center in Painted Post, NY. 55 women are
joining us as we venture into affirming our self-esteem, as
Daughters of the King!
How
do you pack for a getaway?
Always
plan for the unexpected. The weather may not cooperate with your
plans, so have some alternatives ready. We are planning a hayride
and a hike to a waterfall area for tomorrow afternoon. But the
weatherman is talking about rain and thunderstorms. He could be
wrong, but I’d rather be prepared.
I’m taking along some group
games, such as Taboo, Apples to Apples, and Bible Outburst. I also
stopped at the library and picked up a couple of movies: “Amazing
Grace” and “Love Comes Softly.” Those could come in handy, too, for
the ones who don’t want to go swimming later on.
We like to
provide a special goodie bag for the registrants. Pretty paper, a
pen, candy, mints and retreat info all go into the bag. We also
provide a book that correlates with the retreat theme.
One year,
I planned a Silent Hike. I remembered to bring a flashlight, but I
failed to mention ahead of time that they needed to bring old shoes.
We found the mud, and the hike didn’t remain silent for long!
As
a leader, it helps to think through the details. Make sure you
provide a packing list to suggest what might come in handy. List
items like a towel for swimming, a journal to write in during free
time, or spending money for the gift shop. Your thoughtful list
might save someone a bit of frustration later on!
